Our History
The Moreland family were longtime cattle ranchers from Colorado who’d become increasingly concerned with their industry’s negative impact on the environment. They decided to transition to agricultural work with a more mutually nourishing effect on the planet; one where they could make a positive difference.
In 2001, they saw the perfect opportunity in Central California, where orchards of naturally replenishing almond trees thrive in the Mediterranean-like climate. Almonds are not only naturally delicious and nutritious, they’ve become increasingly popular as a wholesome, gluten-free plant-based protein, with a naturally sweet, silky milk that’s an excellent dairy substitute.
So the Morelands made the move. And all went well except for one hitch: the honey bee population was in sudden, alarming decline, and beekeepers across the country were struggling with devastating losses of their hives. This not only created an imbalance in nature, but also put the local almond farmers, who completely depend on honey bees for pollination—at risk.
So in 2008, the Morelands rescued the apiary of a local failing beekeeping operation. They were confident that with focused management, they could turn it around and build up multiple colonies of healthy bees again.
